  End of Year Update

SWGEmu End of Year Announcement

Four years and eight days ago, two men began a task of enormity; the task of building the greatest online game of all time. When Ramsey and his team began their work in December 2004, SWG was a sinking ship, and before long the game they wished to create had disappeared entirely. With these changes came a challenge which had never been overcome, a hurtle which had never before been attempted: recreating a lost game.

Now we are experiencing the fruit of their labour in the first person. Every day thousands of watchers and viewers, participants and posters, chatters and jokers, players and testers, visit the SWGEmu network to connect with others, assist development, watch for updates, and most importantly test their game. Not the game belonging to Sony, nor the game belonging to the SWGEmu Developers, but the game developed by the community for the community. This is the message SWGEmu wishes to share. Players come and go, Games come and go, years come and they do go. But a great community stays strong forever, and proven this we have.

With close to one hundred new people signing up every day, one to two hundred on the test centre at peak times, our recent stress test hitting a massive five hundred and fifty players and two thousand visitors to the forum daily, as every day passes the anticipation and awareness grows. Advertising can sell games, but only sharing and passion can create and uphold one.

The last year has seen SWGEmu evolve from a closed lipped and closed sourced project into a fully functioning development studio. New features and code is committed sometimes on an hourly basis, with almost eleven hundred revisions so far. The team of SWGEmu Developers working daily with only their passion, vigour and spare time, are some of the most talented and intelligent of individuals. Their hard work is the foundation of all that has been created, and all that will endure.
2008 carries with it the memories of so many achievements, so many improvements, and so much growth, they are too numerous to mention. Let us share with you those we feel stood out over the year:

[added] basic vendor/bazaar functionality
[added] Resource/Survey
[added] dancer and musician /commands, flourish
[added] New Characters now spawn with appropriate clothing and gear
[added] All shuttle paths
[Added] Creature Harvesting
[Added] Harvesting, Survey XP
[added] Vehicle Deeds to Blue Frog
[added] Faction Rank System
[added] Medic/Doctor
[Added] No Build Zones/Areas
[Added] Vehicle Crafting
[Added] Starting Location Selection
[Added] Rest Of Galaxie NPCs to SVN
[added] experience gaining for most actions
[added] spending experience (and credits) to gain skills
[added] consider levels
[added] exp for lairs

2009 will be a year that we hope dwarves 2008. It will be a year not of rashness but responsibility, not of normalcy but nuance, not of procrastination but perfection.
So many of the key features to which there has been such devotion will finally come to fruition. As the game approaches a playable state, as announced on Christmas Day, we will be launching Sun Crusher; our fully playable test centre running in tandem with our current Core3 Test Centre, Nova.

For the next year we are looking to bring server communities closer to SWGEmu to expand the options for new players on release. If you are operating a server community and have ideas on how SWGEmu can do a better job of integrating server communities (in general) with the SWGEmu player base, please do not hesitate to post on the forums. Over the past few months, the bigger SWGEmu community has fragmented into smaller server-based factions with ideas only being circulated in the smaller groups. The PreCU experience on any server would be much better if we try to reestablish connections to server communities that do not participate in the growth of the emulator. The SWGEmu team looks forward to working with server communities this year, more so than we have in the past.

2009, and the changes it brings, will no doubt go down in history as yet another vital step forward in the growth of this project, of open source projects worldwide, and of the gaming world. The world will little note, nor long remember what we say here, but it will never forget what has occurred and will occur here. History will be made here, and it is an honour to be here to share it with you all. Thank you. From everyone, from all times, from across the world; thank you for the opportunities you have given us, the support you have provided for us and the commitment which fuels us. We shall work without sleep, we shall solve the unsolvable, we shall continue to smash the odds and figures; until such as time as SWGEmu is absolutely complete. We shall never give up.

A Happy New Years to all of you. May good fortune follow you in all that you do.

--Team SWGEmu

Playable Test Center - Official Server Plans

Playable Test Center

In order to thoroughly test out all aspects of the game, we feel that we are finally at a point in development where we can announce our intentions for a “playable” test center.

What is going to happen to the current TC (Nova)?

The current Test Center (TC:Nova) will run much like it does now. Blue Frogs will still be present to give items and train professions that are in need of immediate testing. New features will be added straight from the SVN to TC:Nova. This saves you the time of having to grind your profession and allows you to test new content immediately. Testers who want to test out new features and play around in a less serious atmosphere will still want to play on TC:Nova. On occasion, TC:Nova may experience database wipes in order to ensure testing and stability.

What is going to be on the new TC (Sun Crusher)?

The new "playable" Test Center (TC:SC) will be a separate and new server. TC:SC will only be updated with new features once we are fairly certain they are 100% stable and tested on TC:Nova. TC:SC will have no blue frogs or @GM commands for players. You are meant to grind your profession, much as you will in the final release of the game. This helps ensure that there will be fewer bugs on TC:SC, and that all levels of game play are tested equally. Since testers will no doubt spend a lot of time leveling their characters on TC:SC, we will make every effort to ensure that we do not wipe the database, unless it is absolutely needed. Testers who want a feel of what the final game will be like, and are looking for something to simply “play” will want to play on TC:SC.

When can we expect these changes to go live?

As long as we continue to receive enough community support and donations to support two servers, while still saving enough for future goals, you should see the server go live sometime in Q1 2009. In order to ensure the best game play possible, we still have a few features that we would like to finish up before starting the playable server. These features, such as crafting and player housing, are in their finishing stages and should be ready and stable in the coming months.

Official Server Plans

We have been bombarded with this question as long as the project has existed. "Is SWGEmu going to host an official server?" We have always deflected this question with non-committal responses. Today we make the official announcement that SWGEmu WILL be hosting a server called "Sun Crusher". Sun Crusher will start out as the "Playable Test Center" and when the official release is ready, then it will be wiped and become the SWGEmu LIVE Server.

After long discussions and debates, we want to make sure that the community can count on SWGEmu to be a pillar in the SWG Emulation scene. Does this mean that SWGEmu wants to force out or hurt the communities? Absolutely not! In fact, we will be setting up numerical standards for servers to become "Official" sponsored servers. Standards would include things such as user base, server hardware, server bandwidth and connection, so we can ensure the entire user base a central place to come and see reliable servers with their specialties. Each server will have their own play style and new features, and keeping information about them in a central location will benefit everyone's population.

Knowing what inquiries will abound from this post, an ambiguous statement will be the answer for the inevitable onslaught of the question "Will SWGEmu implement X new feature, or balance X something". The answer to this is maybe. Our #1 commitment is releasing a fully functional, identical SWG (with bug fixes) emulator. This "vanilla" release (SVN) will be maintained by SWGEmu for the foreseeable future. That said, the majority, if not all, of the SWGEmu developers are excited to taking Sun Crusher and fulfilling the potential that SOE never got around to doing.

More details will come forth in the coming weeks/months about this, but this is our Christmas present to everyone who has been asking and hoping for this. Please continue to enjoy the existing test center, and we look forward to getting the Sun Crusher community going in the very near future. We love you and thank you for your support.

Happy Holidays,
Team SWGEmu

  Quality over quantity

We've been discussing a few things with our team and I'd like to give you an update as our server policy is shaping up.
The most important thing about Darjani, that we've been 100% honest to our community and we will keep it that way.
To make sure you will only meet honest players in our galaxy, we shall apply a no-warn and ban policy against hackers and cheaters. Whoever is caught using a 3rd party software, that is giving him unfair advantages over other players, then his account and IP will be banned.
We know we need a solid server cluster to run a lagfree stable SWGEmu galaxy and we know, that not many other community run servers will have that. This might mean, that many players might flood our servers once Darjani goes live. If this happens, we will put a cap on the number of connected users to our galaxy. Should this happen, we shall reward our active, loyal players by marking their accounts as founders, elders, etc. An elder, or founder account will have priority to connect to our galaxy, until we can upgrade our server cluster to provide a lagfree, premium gaming experience for all the players who wish to connect our galaxy.
We've talked a lot about accepting donations. As I mentioned before, we beleive anyone who accepts donation for a non-existing game and server cluster is dishonest. In case there are many players who are interested in playing on our galaxy we will start accepting donations to cover the expenses of the upgrades.
We may even hire a professional(it means paid) CSR/GM staff if Darjani becomes very popular.
We want to reward those who donate, but we will never turn Darjani into an "itemshop server". Most likely the rewards for donators will be items with aestetic means, that other players wont be able to get in-game, or some of these items might be found in-game as ultra-rare loot.

Feel free to comment anything above, as always we appreciate your feedback!
